Chariots Of Plenty

Wealth Magazine, March 2008 issue

By Bee Ong in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore

YTL’s accomplishments are rooted in consistency and an unrelenting belief that business must be a “force for good.”

Tan Sri Dato' Francis Yeoh's hard-edged leadership style has been apparent since he was a teenager. He was the school captain at Victoria's Institution, one of Kuala Lumpur's top four boys' schools, in 1973. That year, he says, the school excelled in nearly every field, from science to sports. He had taken the head boy's position as a career and saw it as his role to ensure that the school was top in everything the students attempted.

"I was always the good one, the police not the thief, so I never understood what was on the other side of the line," he says. He took discipline so seriously that he earned a few enemies in school, who expressed their antagonism by puncturing his car tyres. Today, his detractors are more likely to give vent in newspaper columns and blogs.

The age of 16 was a pivotal time for the conscientious young man. The training for student leadership taught him two values that he still uses in business today: Discipline and patience. It was also the year he made a heroic offer to drop out of school to help his father's construction business, which was battered by the oil crises.

That was also the year he laid a foundation that has served as a basis for his actions over the next decades. He discovered Christianity. "It was an epiphany that changed my life and how I think, and my values all changed. Without God, it's very hard to find values consistently and be a force for good. In fact, to survive, you would probably do anything, compromise perhaps," he says. Yeoh attributes all achievements to God. These include YTLs 55% compounded annual growth rate since 1986, a low staff turnover and one of the world's highest earnings-per-employee ratio.

"If you're a force for good, people believe in you and you do well. We chose good business models where we leverage on other people's technology and use it as a force for good, to come up with a formula to supply water and electricity at very competitive prices. That's why our profits and business model are very sustainable. The long-term thinking came from God. When you're a force for good, so-called wealth follows you because if you have the discipline and consistency to have faith in a good God, you would end up very well," he says.

"Rose was from Hong Kong, and they are a very competitive society. She pushed me a lot and it brought me to go for the best of the best. If you want to do something, you do something worthwhile or not do it at all. And that's why I miss her a lot."

It is also the source of his conservationist approach, which YTL started practising long before the green movement became fashionable. "To be a person of value, you have to understand that you are a steward of God's wealth and wealth comes through his forests, his trees and society at large, and you have to protect them. Only then are you counted as really giving back what God gave you. That is the ultimate end, so if success leads to the ultimate end, that's fine. But today, there is hardly anybody who does not count how rich someone is or his age. Nobody talks about, wow, I like the state of your heart, I like the colour of your soul.”

Three languages

Morality is salient at YTL. The group's employees are required to master three languages, and morality is foremost: "One is the language of God. He has to believe in some God, it could be the Bible or the Koran or the Torah, whatever, and that's a good start. If you believe in God and you understand the essence of God, you will have very good moral fibre. Morality's number one, stacked very high, so we ask them to participate in businesses where they have a clear conscience. The second is the language of machines - technology and so forth. And third, they have to be proficient in English, the international language of business. Every person at YTL is an ambassador of the brand and you have to articulate your business well.”

Power Of Two

Yeoh's ambitiousness found an ally in his late wife, Puan Sri Roasaline Yeoh, who appears to have played a significant role in the progress of YTL. She was a celebrity appearing in several Cantonese blockbusters and had her own TV show at Hong Kong's TVB before she met Yeoh. He proposed marriage within a fortnight of their first meeting and she left her career in Hong Kong to join him in Malaysia in 1982.

Puan Sri Rosaline urged him to never compromise on quality. "Rose was from Hong Kong, and they are a very competitive society. She pushed me a lot and it brought me to go for the best of the best. If you want to do something, you do something worthwhile or not do it at all. And that's why I miss her a lot," he says.

She started Cane Creations, a furniture and art gallery, which is one of the unlisted businesses in the YTL group. She spotted unknown Malaysian artists and exhibited their work in her gallery. She also designed the interiors of several major YTL projects such as Pangkor Laut Resort, the Ritz-Carlton Residences and parts of Starhill Gallery in Kuala Lumpur. She selected the furnishing, antiques and artwork in the Yeohs' penthouse at the Ritz-Carlton Residences, which staff say is only open to very few visitors.

Yeoh hosted Pete Sampras at the three-storey apartment when he was playing Roger Federer in the city last year. Since Puan Sri Rosaline's death in 2006 after a seven-year fight with breast cancer, Yeoh has softened, his eldest daughter, Ruth, observes. Yeoh has been trying to play both the roles of father and mother since. He asks his personal assistant, Sylvia Chew, who has worked for him for more than 20 years, to remind him of his five children's birthdays. Recently, on the day of his son Joshua's birthday, he sent SMSes to all his children to remind them of the occasion. They all sent back messages: "Dad, we've already wished him happy birthday. You're the last!"

"In fact, my children 'mummy' me now. They are much, much more mature because they are brought up with God as a foundation, so strong that I need not have to worry now, actually," he reflects. Sometimes, he wonders if he is taking on too much in the business. The role of managing director of an extensive conglomerate, after all, leaves him with little personal time. But he has concluded that he is not. "I still have time with my children and I'm not so disconnected that I don't know them anymore and they don't know me. All right so far," he muses.

The entire family still goes on vacation twice a year, in the summer and winter. In December, they returned to the Swiss ski slopes that they'd visited for the last decade. Ruth declares: "My father is an Anglophile. He loves snow and his white Christmas. I think my passion pretty much comes from him, I'm so thankful for him.”

In God He Trust: Tan Sri Francis Yeoh

(transcript from http://lighthousejournal.wordpress.com/2008/07/11/in-god-he-trust-tan-sri-francis-yeoh/

For the benefit of those who do not know YTL Corp and Tan Sri Francis Yeoh. Especially the Non-Malaysians. YTL Corp bears the initial of the founder’s name Yeoh Tiong Lay. It started of as a construction firm, it has sinced been tranformed into a conglomerate with interest in property, utilities and cement with businesses from Malaysia to as far as Europe.

In 2006, Tan Sri Yeoh’s wife passed away after a long battle against breast cancer. Nevertheless, his faith in God remain as strong. He said he does not fear death any more, as when he dies, he will be able to see his wife as he knows his wife will be waiting for him.

Below is an article which i was trying to find. It was published in The Star newspaper last year. The article is a testimony of YTL Corp. MD Tan Sri Yeoh. I have always been trying to look for the article. This was what I found in another person’s blog. I am not sure if it is the original as publishd. But it is somewhat similar to what I have read.

In God he trusts

There is an epiphany in my story,” says Tan Sri Francis Yeoh. “I was 16 and had what seemed like an insurmountable problem so I vowed that whichever God would help me, I would dedicate the rest of my life to Him.

“I happened to wander around Bukit Bintang and dropped into the Chinese Baptist Church. It was a Friday. I poured out my woes to the priest who comforted me and said not to worry because by Monday my problem would be gone as promised by Jesus Christ.

“True enough, the miracle happened and my problem vanished on Monday. See, if I had entered a temple, I might have been a staunch Buddhist today. But I believe Jesus Christ directed me towards Him and found me worthy of being His servant.”

As to what the ‘problem’ was, Yeoh grins, “I am not telling you, maybe I will reveal it in my autobiography.” Being devious and an expert at adding two and two into five, I suspect he asked Jesus to save his father’s company. He was 16 when he offered to drop out of school to work with his father.

During the 1970s upheaval, his father decided to throw in the towel and close Syarikat Pembenaan Yeoh Tiong Lay. He summoned his staff to announce the news but vowed to pay their salaries and all debts by liquidating all his properties and possessions.

Many employees then came forward, declaring they would sell their jewellery and go without pay to save the company as they had absolute faith in Yeoh Tiong Lay to turn it around.

If this had happened on a Monday, the 16-year-old Francis must have wept tears of joy as he witnessed the power of Jesus.

“When I announced my conversion to Christianity from Buddhism, there was quite a reaction. My parents and siblings were up in arms as I was the first in 20 generations to become a Christian.

“My family said I was insulting my ancestors as we practised ancestor worship. I gave my siblings a Bible each which they combed through carefully to tear it apart. Then miraculously, one by one they became believers and then full Christians. The process took seven to 10 years. However, my parents remain Buddhist but they understand.”

He cites one stunning, recent example of the abundance of Christ. After he acquired Wessex Water in 2002 for RM8.5bil, he decided to hold YTL’s annual free concert for 2003 in Bath, England.

Luciano Pavarotti was asked to sing but his only free date was Aug 7. Unfortunately, August is the wettest month and it was feared that the open-air concert might be a washout literally.

Yeoh decided to up the ante by inviting Placido Domingo and Jose Carreras to join forces as The Three Tenors.

The Yeoh family and directors who still meet every Monday as the ‘Yeoh Cabinet’, balked at the expense which was in the millions. Some questioned the need for three tenors when Pavarotti should suffice. Finally Yeoh said, “Don’t worry, Jesus will pay the bill.”

Chuckles the crafty man,” That was one sure fire way of ending any protests as they are all Christians! Would you believe that August of 2003 turned out to be the hottest and driest in Bath’s history!

“Thousands enjoyed the glorious, free open-air concert. Because the rest of the month was so hot, people kept using and drinking extra water and our profits unexpectedly shot up by the same millions, the exact amount the concert cost us! So in the end, I was right in my faith and Jesus did pay the bill.”

Yeoh pauses and then says, “Whatever you write about me, please don’t portray me as a po-faced zealot! I am not a firebrand, fundamentalist Christian preacher. “

He explains the beauty of God’s love: “Moses did not have just the 10 Commandments but 613 laws. If you break any one of them, you are considered a sinner and hell is the destination.

“Since we are all imperfect, Jesus rescues us with just two laws: Love God with all your heart and soul and love your neighbours as you would yourself. If you abide by these two laws which cover everything and make perfect sense, you’re saved! Remember, it is the goodness of humans that make democracy possible and the horrible evil in us that makes democracy so necessary!”

He does not believe in denominations and simply calls himself a Christian. “Many think I am a born-again Christian but Jesus in John’s gospel, says ‘you cannot see the Kingdom of God until you are born again’ so in a way, all Christians are born again.”

Bad mood huh?

Half a day gone.

Not having a good mood until the lunch time. Well, I can't explain why i experience it.

Man is a very unique spices as well, they have a tendency not to show their weaknesses but actual fact is when they are in a bad mood the whole world smell. And they are the only one still believe that they actually hide it very well. That's man, you know.

One advice here to all the ladies, if you found your man act weird. The best thing is leave them alone. Not just walk away, you need to pretend and ask 'darling, are you ok today ?" he will answer 'I'm ok'(But he is definitely not ok) and you continue ask the last question 'you want to be alone?' nevermind the answer, just make yourself disappear. After he 'wake up', he will sure find you no matter where you are, don't worry.

So, I decided not to have too much conversations with anyone unless it is neccessary. I had a quick lunch, 5 mins and hide myself up in my confortable cave (my desk la!) to heal my worms. haha!

Anyway, I think i recover already and get ready for training later. Hopeful, it going to be a fun and good afternoon.

SIN; My Sin

I'm a Christian, a normal yet simple human and I have sinned.

Before accepted Christ, I'm more to a free thinker. It's like every religious is teaching people to be good.

However, after get to know about christainity and found out Christ is not a religious but a relationship. A relationship between Father in Heaven and son on earth. I am the son, His beloved son. Jesus also said I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. So, I have made up my mind and follow Jesus.

Back to Sin, my sinful act. I have a lot of bad habits, sinful lifestyle before I believe in Jesus. After become His beloved son, most of the bad habits and lifestyle have been disappeared or transformed just like that. It's like suddenly you realised that you have no appetite for something you crave to do before eg. smoking or drinking and etc..

Unfortunately, not all were being wash clean yet. Left behind some like saying vulgar words and watching pornographic.

Lately, I have chance to enjoy my access to internet privitely. (I used to have internet access but due to moving around often until recently only applied for a connection). Happen that i surfed and click on some pornographic links. Bingo! i got stucked inside for awhile there. Of course I know it is not right and blar blar blar ..

Then I realised that it is not Jesus don't want to help clean up these left over. But it is myself that don't want to let go. Although, I did not purposely go and looks for it but whenever there is a "accidental oportunity" I really have hard time to resist it. Yes, I prayed. But still not working, again because I still holding on it.

So, the mystery solved and I have decided to let go all these vulgar words and pornographic thing before it become another dissater. Let Jesus handle the cleanse process. I know not long after this, I will be set free from these bondage.

Question: you had sinned, will you lost your salvation?

Answer: no way.

For all my sins have been punished on Jesus by hanging on the cross. He has exchanged his righteousness with my past, now and future sins.

For Jesus says But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

God is a good God, He has sacrificed His Son to save us. He will not forsake us just because we have sinned. Otherwise, Jesus won't have to suffer on the cross. For He know our weaknesses and most of the time we can't help ourselves. We need HIM.

Therefore, everytime we sin we need to confess our righteousness in Christ and remenber God is forgive us. When the more we believe that we are forgive and understand how great is the love of our Father in Heaven. how much more will we want to hurt someone who love us some much?

That's what I do now. I want to stop hurting my Daddy God.

Daddy God, I love you because you first love me.

My Baby @ My Blessings

I got a baby boy and he is 9 months old.

I always thought that getting married, having children and starting a family of my own is something unthinkable of.

A lot of the time, experience encounter from surrounding and especially my own parent tells me, I must really really really thinks many many many times before get into even a serious relationship not to say marriage.

So, my attitude was I prefer a companionship rather a relationship. An "activity partner" more than a life partner. Of course along the way I hurts few and most of the time I choose to ignore and run away.

I accepted Christ in 2004. In 2005, my life at that point of time is absolutely miserable, business mis-manage and runs into huge debts. Everything comes to an end. I closed my company, my relationship with my family hit the wall and friends are gone like wind. However, debts are still there to be my companion. I almost gone crazy.

In 2006, I married my wife and we start a small breakfast stall. Life was tough but happy and debts still there.

By end of 2006, we moved out of my hometown and started a new life in the city we live now. I got a job we settle down a bit and she got pregnant 4 months later. I was like, you are kidding me, Lord!

But He told me baby is a gift, a sign of blessings from HIM.

Our life never looks back ever since. From the hardest moment during pregnancy, without a place to give birth, got conned by housing agent, run out of cash and numerous challenge. He pulls us over each time.

Until now, we got a house though it is rented. I got a car and I also changed job recently. My income increased and we live in a condition we dare not dream of couple of years ago.

I believe lots of good things are coming my way. And I am counting.

Everything on this earth will be gone one day but His words never changed.

Just because He is Jesus Christ, my Lord, my source of BLESSINGS!!!
